| The first question
boo normally gets asked when people find out what he does is "what
has a didgeridoo got to do with the paranormal?" The answer is simple
and complicated at the same time. First off the simple bit, there are many
Aboriginal beliefs involving ghosts and it's an old old Aboriginal belief
that the sound of the didgeridoo creates a link between this world and the
world of their ancestors, the spirit world. It's this belief that boo is
experimenting with in his paranormal work. Now the complicated bit, which is usually preceded by "Does it work?" the answer to which is, it seems to but boo's not totally sure why, he does however have several theories. When he started to work with the paranormal it was a case of try it and see what happens, as far as we can tell he is probably the only person in the UK and maybe the world, trying this as an experiment. He first experimented using didgeridoos of different pitches. The didgeridoo is basically a big hollow stick, it hasn't got holes like a flute or recorder has, so plays at one pitch, this can be altered using various playing techniques but on the whole it plays on one note. These pitch experiments were based on ideas to do with vibrations and again Aboriginal belief, the Aborigines believe that if the Earth had a voice it would sound like a didgeridoo. Combining this belief with the theory that a lot of paranormal events are connected with energy from Earth vibrations boo attempted to match these vibrations, the problem was that depending on the source of the information the Earth was said to vibrate at different pitches (sound is caused by the vibration of air molecules, which travels as a wave, the speed of the vibration determines the length of the wave, the length of the wave determines the pitch of the noise) and sometimes at different pitches depending on the time of day! The end result was that it didn't seem to matter what pitch it was, different didgeridoos could produce results in the same location, yet on other occasions, a didgeridoo which had worked before would produce nothing. This had the added bonus of he no longer had to carry 8 or 9 didgeridoos to an investigation! One theory was that the sound drew spirits towards the didgeridoo in pretty much the same way that the sound of the bell used during a Victorian séance is believed to. boo's favourite theory has developed during his work with the UK Paranormal Research Society as well as renowned psychic medium Becky Walsh and TV's Most Haunted medium, Ian Shillito. The belief that spirits use energy from their surroundings is the key factor in boo's theory. Anyone who's ever sat in a séance circle, used any sort of divination (glass, Ouija board etc.) or suddenly had fresh batteries drain from electrical equipment for no apparent reason will understand that energy plays a big part in a lot of things paranormal. What boo believes is happening is; sound is a form of energy, didgeridoo players learn a technique called circular breathing,: blowing out through the mouth while at the same time breathing in through the nose, which enables them to keep a continuous note coming from the didgeridoo, this constant flow of energy appears to help the manifestation of paranormal activity. The loudness or intensity of the sound seems also to play a part this photo shows a very bright, clearly defined orb (not usually seen with the naked eye, orbs are open to a lot of debate, some claim they're an early stage of spirit activity, others say they're nothing more than dust, rain, flying insects or some other small object reflecting the light of a camera flash) at the foot of his loudest didgeridoo. During the investigations he's taken part in it's become accepted that if there are signs of activity but it's not particularly strong, a glass "feels like it wants to move", a pendulum is twitching but won't swing or the psychics at a séance can feel the presence of spirits but they're too shy or unable to make their presence known boo's didgeridoo will usually give them a bit of a kick start. Before an investigation begins boo likes to find a spot to play in just to make some energy available to get the night off to a good start. That's the theory part over.
